Hah! I wonder why people do that? Sympathy? Feeling they're less likely to be criticized for being "unrealistic" if they preemptively assure you that This Is The Way It Really Happened? I guess the astral plane antics should be considered distinct from the other two in some way.
Crusty old lit people sometimes complain that it doesn't make any sense to write a memoir at twenty-six; I disagree in principle but in practice I'd probably rather get my tell-alls from the old.
