What I've Finished Reading

I finally finished Les Miserables! It was too much by a long shot and it was good. Marius should feel bad for the rest of his life. The translation was by Norman Denny, who also translated the biography of Balzac that I loved, and I thought it was pretty good, too. It provides a big boost in readability over some earlier translations, with no corresponding loss of Hugorrendousness.

Next week: maybe a different book?

Is the Denny translation the one that forgets to kill off one of Les Amis d'ABC? (There's one translation where one of them gets accidentally left out of the part where Hugo's, like, "X was killed. Y was killed.", which has always stuck with me since there's something just so absolutely tragic about the simple, matter-of-fact way that passage is written, and I know it's a translation error but I like to think that somebody lived.)

Congratulations on finishing the Brick!

Marius SHOULD feel bad for the rest of his life, and actually knowing Marius he probably will, but NOT about the things that he should feel bad about. He will find some other unrelated thing to flagellate himself about.

Any ideas what book you will read next? Or do you need some time to recover before you can even think about other books? Les Mis is such a commitment that finishing it is almost like a break-up.

I'm sort of between books or at least between books-I-have-anything-to-say-about. I recently got a lot of semi-self-pubbed anthologies from the Conservative Values Scifi subculture unloaded onto me, and I have thoughts about them but am reluctant to get specific lest their unloader has some kind of mention-alert set up. (I don't know if they sell well enough to provide any plausible deniability). I realize that's a very silly position to be in, but that's my reading life right now.

I did get a couple of books from the LFL that I'll be reading soon!
