I like the Thursday Next books. I was much more enthusiastic about The Eyre Affair the second time round, when I listened to the audiobook. The first time, I came away feeling like some of its bizarreness was because it was meant to be funny and I didn't think it was all that funny. Nothing feels quite so pointless as humour when you don't find it funny (or at least that's my experience). So it makes sense to me that Fforde doesn't appeal to everyone.
