I imagine it's pretty difficult to contrive a marriage of convenience plot in a contemporary romance without enlisting the services of crazy family members, especially if you don't want to keep going to the immigration well. I think Leigh Michaels did about the best she could - especially considering all the story beats she had to pack into a short novel.
