Reading Wednesday: An Apology and a Placeholder

I'd like to apologize for the recent streak of non-posting, which is likely to continue off and on. There are some non-book things in real life that are taking up all my spare time. One of them involves cockroaches.

However, I can say that I've started reading Les Miserables for the first time in many years and it's so great. Hugo has just decided that he's going to let this melodrama finish bUT FIRST it's very important that he set the scene with twenty chapters on the battle of Waterloo. Maybe it won't turn out to be literally twenty! But then again, maybe it will.

EW COCKROACHES. Hope that is settled soon!

I don't know if the Waterloo digression is literally twenty chapters but I AM pretty sure that there are whole entire books that are shorter than that digression. Say what you will about Hugo, the man followed his bliss.

Despite not necessarily loving every digression, I love the fact of Hugo's digressions! He is A Man Who Knows What He Likes.

Sorry about the cockroaches. We've been dealing with them on and off for the past four months, after never having them in the apartment for 8 years. Another resident said it was a new thing in the building . . . .

19th century authors really do have the best digressions.

Oh no. :( This is our first true infestation, too. We live in the damp South and the building is falling apart, so it was probably only a matter of time, but still. :( Good luck!

Once you accept the value of digressions, you might as well accept the value of a sixty-page history digression smack in the middle of suspenseful present action!

Cockroaches will outlive us all, but hopefully they can learn to do it somewhere other than my kitchen.

Accepting digressions would certainly liven up how to write a best selling novel books:D
